When I was 17, I failed my O-Levels. I wasn’t anything impressive at all. Lots of my friends were going off to university and I wasn’t feeling very loved or excited by life.

Then someone read this to me:
The Kingdom of God is within you.
It struck me like a thunderbolt.
Surely this cannot be true? But it is.
Immediately my view of myself and of other people changed profoundly. It gave me a passion to serve, inspire and encourage other people.
That led me into politics. And it remains a dominant theme and motivation for what I do.
This phrase doesn’t pay any recognition to whether you are unemployed or sitting in the House of Lords: that’s irrelevant.
My value does not come from where I sit and what I’ve done. My value comes from the Kingdom of God being within me.
