Spotlight on… Dotha Blackwood

Please tell us about a time in your life when God spoke to you most vividly and personally through the Bible. Which passage was it and what did it mean to you at the time?

I was studying for my masters at Spurgeon’s and was having headaches, dizzy spells and the occasional blackouts (subsequently diagnosed as an inner-ear problem complicated by migraine episodes).  At the time it was really stressing me out as I could not concentrate on the many things I had to do (college work and leading a church to name two);  When Martin Selma, then Vice Principal prayed for me in chapel that I’d know and be able to let go of some things and which one to focus on at any given time a fragment of a verse resonated as it was read (Philippians 3:13) …This ONE THING I do…  God reminded me through the ‘quote out of context’ to focus on ONE thing, moment by moment.

In recent years what has helped to keep the Bible fresh for you?

Honestly, mainly my love for the life stories therein – it just fascinates me to see how the people in the Bible lived and reacted in their given situations.  I imagine myself there with them and it brings it all alive – and fresh.

What does your regular practice of Bible reading look like?

For the last two years we (my Tutor Group at Moorlands College) decided to do the college’s two Bible reading plan, so every morning at 7.30 in my office I read the portion for the day.  I also like listening to the Bible on CD and at times do that on my way to or from work as well.

What would you say to a Christian who is struggling to read the Bible?

JUST DO IT!  It could change your life. Additionally, try different times of day, methods (e.g. listening) and different translations.  Finally, don’t condemn yourself if you miss a day or two or more sometimes, just pick it up again and continue.

What is your prayer for the Biblefresh initiative?

My prayer is that through this initiative many, many hundreds and thousands of people will begin to read and engage with the Bible and find in there the joy, fun, guidance and help that I and many others have found.
