Please tell us about a time in your life when God spoke to you most vividly and personally through the Bible. Which passage was it and what did it mean to you at the time?
Thirty years ago, my young wife and I discovered she had Multiple Sclerosis. The Lord spoke to us both independently of each other: ‘You do not realise now what I am doing, but later you will understand’. (John 13:7).
In recent years what has helped to keep the Bible fresh for you?
It helps so much when you are reading to have the possibility in mind of teaching/sharing the passage with someone else. I also listen to Scripture on CD while travelling. Recently, I have been refreshed by reading five psalms a day, so I cover them all each month., Variation is the key!
What does your regular practice of Bible reading look like?
For over thirty years, I have used Robert Murray McCheyne’s reading plan: it takes me through the Old Testament once and the New Testament and Psalms twice per year.
What would you say to a Christian who is struggling to read the Bible?
Meet up with another individual and read a passage together and out loud. Then pray over it. Go online, and interact with one of Scripture Union’s daily helps. Get some Bible reading notes regularly.
What is your prayer for the Biblefresh initiative?
That thorough the Word of the Lord, we might know the Lord of the Word better.
