Please tell us about a time in your life when God spoke to you most vividly and personally through the Bible. Which passage was it and what did it mean to you at the time?
God had led me and my wife to Psalm 41 a year before, but not understanding the dream, I put it on one side. A year after this, I was sitting outside the consultant’s room; my son had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. I turned to Psalm 41 and the verses connected with the original dream; an evil disease or thing has laid hold of him; he shall not arise, so they say. This was the condition we were in. But three verses later I read on to “by this I know I have found favour with God, that I triumph over my enemies”. Faith began to arise that we would triumph over the works of Satan, and we did. In that moment, faith began to rise. My son was healed!
In recent years what has helped to keep the Bible fresh for you?
Adversity! And Christ in all the Scriptures continues to thrill my soul.
What does your regular practice of Bible reading look like?
Generally, each morning with my wife we read the three chapters and an extract from Proverbs or Psalms in the Bible through the year. In my earlier years I read 14 chapters a day; two chapters from seven divisions of the Bible. Plus study, meditation, reading and listening to the Word of God being preached. I’ve also found it helpful to memorise the Scriptures.
What would you say to a Christian who is struggling to read the Bible?
Do it! Turn the TV off! Pray before reading, read it with friends, get it as a CD or a DVD if you struggle to read.
What is your prayer for the Biblefresh initiative?
Inevitably, that it will stimulate Bible reading throughout the country again.
